Uncertain but exciting

I love being able to say I've just come away from an exciting Elders meeting (which, to be honest, is not always!)
Tonight we were discussing, amongst other things, what I'll be doing this year, which is:
Running my VETAMORPHUS peer group, which is gonna be really cool.
Doing a subject or two at college, maybe Greek-which might be...interesting
Doing Forge which I'm really excited about.
Working at Flinders(their website is boring, so I won't bother linking to it) doing youth a work stuff there, which is looking awesome this year
And, planting a new congregation from Frankston! Which I'm heaps excited about!

Its so cool going to a church where the Elders and leadership are just heaps supportive and up for doing new forms of ministry.

My heart has for a long time been for people who aren't particularly interested in the normal models of church that are most commonly offered. Particulalrly those who play footy, and for whom, coming to a normal church would be far too large a cultural leap.

What this new church will look like, where and when we'll meet, what we'll do, who'll come, is still all being shaped, but its slowly in the process.

I'm pretty excited about it all. I'll keep you posted.

GO DIGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is going to be a great year for you. You'll learn lots and grow heaps I'm sure as you step out in faith.
I'm planning on coming to Melbourne for the National Summit for the Emreging Church in June so we'll have to catch up then. At the moment the plan is to be over for about a week and a half, do the conference, hang around and meet some people and watch the mighty Saints.

I'm heaps excited for you Digs- sounds great!!

On the whole diff modes of church- at a recent youth leaders meeting we were discussing new ideas for the new year, and one of our leaders (who I adore!) suggested we hold youth on a sunday evening once a month as a youth church service to 'get them used to church'. that statement made me feel sick- still not entirely sure why and I'm still working through that and if I won't to have anything to do with the idea.
Might just sit back and see how it goes with this one but the idea of socialising the kids into church services just seems yuk to me.

hey digs
i'm pumped as for ya bro. my mind has been a-whirl with youth min stuff for this year today...it's driving me a bit insano [funnily enough] but in a good way.
Stoked that the elders meeting went well, we really do have such a supportive community @ FCoC. I'm so excited about your footy church stuff, it's totally awesome and an adventure that you are embarking on, but at the same time, it's an adventure that our whole church is embarking on and you are the ambassador...how fantastic!
The whole incarnational vs. missional is doing my head in, i tell ya! i can't wait to just get things started!!!!!!!!! i'll stop ranting now...will see ya friday and very much looking forward to it...catchya later lucas...immean DIGS! lol bye mate.

Yeah no worries Gaz, it'd be great to connect with ya-mu first blog friend! (My friends give me so much crap for saying I have blog friends, but you gotta admit-it does sound kinda dorky!)

Hmm, I've never really pondered the idea of socialising people into church as such, although that is probably the way a lot of youth ministries (and a lot of other ministries-emerging, incarnational, art classes, sports teams)

It doesn't sound like a great saying, but the whole idea of relational evangelism is one of my core shaping understandings of ministry.

Maybe a different challenge would be to get the kids to see what they do on a Friday night as church-which it often is for people, even if they don't name it as such.

Digger said...

Yeah I guessed that was you Masonic.

Yeah they are way supportive and stuff hey-totally appreciate that.

Yeah youth ministry is gonna be a good one, look forward to seeing what happens with it.

Yeah, having internet friends is a bit dorky, especially for cool, sophisiticated men such as ourselves.
Have you done the nerd test on Roo's blog? I scored a 3 (out of 50 I think) so I'm pretty secure in my un-nerdiness.

Well I actually suggested the idea of having one friday night a month slightly more 'church' orientated and I was just told about all the great new changes being made to the sunday night services (not sure if this was a response or total change of subject).
I have nothing against taking the kids to church if their up for going (even if it means driving all the way down to Frankston) but I'm not comfortable with the idea of trying to get them into church on a sundays because they need to get used to how church is done!
Why can't we 'do church' where there at, on fridays instead of changing everything on them to fit into our box of what church 'is'.- or is that making it too easy for the kids?
Also relised that one reason I hated the idea of getting the youth 'used' to church is that as a church I think we've become so used to and comfortable to how church is that any changes, no matter how small, cause so much complaining.- although I must say we seem to be slowly overcoming this one.

I have the same feelings lot of the time, we do we have to get them used to how to 'do' church. The only problem with friday night church is this, what happens when they are too old for the youth ministry? Where do they go? Statistics show they dont go anywhere a lot of the time. So...how do we not teach them to 'DO' church but still get them passionate enough to find somewhere after they are too old, that may not have the multimedia or the like? I don't know

Good to find your blog, I was trawling around for some Australian Youth Ministry perspective. "Get them used to Church" is an expression that winds me up as is "holding on to them!" You guys are fortunate to have forge, we have no training like that that alo draws in people in mainstream Seminaries. One of my struggles is how to disciple young people into church leadership so they can mould it, rather than be discipled into a culturally irrelevant ecclesiology. Hey ho, just thought I'd say Hi. Hello fellow fisherman,

Did you know that 16% of the U.S. population goes fishing at least 16 days a year?

Did you also know that over 75% of the nations fishermen do not fish during "prime time"; fish feeding hours?

Those precious few moments before twilight can be absolutely magical. Even up until 11pm at night, the largest predators of any species feed ravenously.

Don't believe me? Check out Daniel Eggertsen's story, and a picture of a couple of his catches here : "Evening Secrets plus more"

I want you to do me a favor and try it out so I can see what you think of it, and if it works for you as well as it did for me.

You will be one of the first to try it out.

Gone Fishin',

Neil
