Blog advertising

I have been contemplating putting advertising on my blog for quite a while, but have resisted due to my intense disdain for advertising of any description. But I have been unpacking a little more lately what is going on behind that hatred. I think a great deal of it is the manipulative nature of the advertising/marketing world, trying to make us feel that we're not good enough unless we have their product, fuelling our sense of loathing and self-pity; the only salvation from which is what they're selling you.

Marilyn Manson says it brilliantly in Bowling For Columbine, I can't quote it exactly, but he says something about 'they make you feel so bad about yourself so much, that they trick you into thinking the girls won't f*&$ you unless you look like they want you to'

But would advertising on my blog, which would just be a few written words-not pictures or slogans, really be that bad? Would it be a couple extra harmless dollars in the bank-or would I be selling out my morals for the sake of a few bucks? I'm still not sure...

I guess in the end it comes down to wether you're really that desperate. I was reading a mates blog who oh so very wisely commented, "something to think about: why is it that we are socially exceptable wanting to be different as long as someone else is doing it? and when someone is uniquely different they are not socially excepted?" Marilin Manson not long ago gave an interview and explained that yes he's hated because he's so different and goes against everything socially excepted. If you truely believe getting a few bucks from throwing in a few extras will "fulfill you" then go ahead... But in my view it'll give you nothing.

If you want to earn some money from blogging my suggestion would be to start another blog on a topic that you know something about but also is one that people search on to buy on the net. You wont get much money from ads on this blog - it probably would not be worth the effort.

To fully work with the idea of advertising, you have to know how the system works. First of all, you can choose the category of ads you have. So that's a plus.
The main purpose of the ads system is so you can maintain your website for virtually nothing. 'Pay per click' ads only raise a small amount of cash (usually around enough to hold a purchased site). Since the blog is free, there is really no reason for the ads. To raise enough money to warrant the company sending a check to you would take a while ($20 on average) since most clicks raise anything from 5 cents to $2.

Then again... I see no harm in doing so. I'd click it for ya ;)

I just read my comment over again and realised that my comment could be interpreted as saying that you don't know anything about the subject you blog about.. haha not what I meant.

The content of this blog would not generate ads that have a sufficiently high pay rate to make it worthwhile... is what I was trying to say:)

Content like gadgets, digital photography etc are more likely to get higher paying ads.

Cactus Bob I don't think it was a matter of whether or not it will fulfill me, but rather whether or not I could get some easy money-for-nothing from it.

Haha, yeah no worries Phil! Not that I think you saying I don't know what I'm talking about would be an unfair comment!

True, nm, this blog is free, but as you say, I can't really see any harm in doing it. We'll see.

I used to have Google ads on my blog, but I enver got any money from it. I use Amazon now, but only so I can show what I've been reading watching and listening to, and I don't think I've gotten any moneyu out of it.

I'm with Christop, Digs - Amazon advertising allows you to select the material you advertise - so you can plug the stuff you are reading, watching, listening too - and if you don't want cash - you can take your money in Amazon Credits - so when you are purchasing books for College and stuff - comes in very handy!!
