Rivett: Masculine spirituality

Rivett: Masculine spirituality

My mate Pete has blogged some interesting thoughts on a topic that has always played at the back of my mind-what does a masculine spirituality look like? Why does church so often feel like it's designed for women? Why don't men like church? Why are the ways we talk about Jesus always so lovey-dovey?

Pete is more specifically talking about the sit in a circle and reflect/candles/meditation thing, which I actually really get into-but know many other blokes struggle with. So what would a masculine spirituality look like? How do we better engage males with their own spiritual side?

Well I actually find something very spiritual about my fighting and jiu jitsu training? How is that for masculine spirituality. Come to the studio and I'll make you see God :)

I think masculine spirituality is just walking with Jesus as a man. It is our seperating of spirituality and life that makes everything weird.

Yeah I see where your coming from there mate-I'll get back to you on the offer to come into the studio!

Wht do you mean about the separating of spirituality and life stuff? As in that all of life is spiritual, we just need the eyes to see it as such?

Yes that is exactly what I mean, if you haven't read it before, try reading Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. Then imagine it in the middle of your neighborhood not in a monestary, it is brilliant.

see you next week

maybe something that's made the whole 'masculine spirituality' thing hard is God's reference to Christians as the 'bride of Christ'? just a random thought.

and something else: maybe our society's interpretation of what 'Love' is - i.e. mushy, romantic, emotional, girly feelings etc. has coloured our view of what God's Love is, replacing God's true love with this wishy-washy girly ideal of 'love' - which can't appeal to guys much!! (and not heaps to me either!). Considering God is Love and love is such a key theme/the basis for everything, it's a pretty dodgy one to get wrong, hey?!!!

Yeah interesting thought Masonic-not sure how much that one shapes us?

Did you hear that talk that Frosty gave at Forge-cos that was so what he was talking about-how our understanding of love has been so warped we can't think of it in any other way than romantic love. Gave me some great food for thought. Still so much from that conference I haven't blogged about yet!
