So are you a cult??

This was the question posed to me the other day when I was explaining to one of the boys down at cricket about our lil church plant project! I think he was half-joking half-serious too which makes it even funnier, and its now our running joke. He's always asking for updates on the cult, how many goats we've sacrificed etc!

It's funny the amount of people that, when I tell them I'm leading a team thats planting a church, they ask in astonishment 'Are you allowed to do that?!' I dunno what it is, but it seems some people just have this perception that you're not allowed to do that.

Particularly when I tell them its at my house, that just seems to be too much for many people's ideas. I guess we have enough trouble convincing the people in church that church is not a building, that church is people in community, so I probably shouldn't be surprised that others struggle to get their heads around it.

This might be a long shot, but perhaps if you stopped sitting in a circle in your lounge room, naked and smoking dope, people would stop calling you a cult.

Just a suggestion.

Crap! That'll leave us with nothing to do! Got any better ideas smart-arse!

residual christendom is actually a real issue for us in mission.

people with very little background still have perceptions of what church ought to be like!

being 'missional' sometimes just confuses them.

its hard isn't it :)

Do you think it is residual christendom, Hamo, or just no idea at all? If the only 'religious' types they ever know or hear about are a bit cult-like then perhaps we should expect to be seen this way...

hey digs,
it's tough, cos our understanding of church/mission has been the result of a long process starting with a 'typical' understanding or experience of church. For those who haven't even got to the stage of breaking down the stereotype of what church actually is about, well, where do you start? and it's true...if the people of the church don't even understand that they ARE the church...crap! but hey, it was never gonna be easy. As anne of green gables, my hero, says, 'everything thats worth having is some trouble'!!! haha

Yeah I reckon its a bit of both Hamo and Matt. I think the big thing that Christendom has left us with is buildings! All many people know of church is the buildings they drive past on the way to work.
