When heroes fail

Was chatting with a kid today at school about certain people in her life, role models, who have let her down at various stages of her life in various ways, and the pain of dealing with those people not living up to be the people she thought they were.

It made me think about similar siuations in my own life, role models from various spheres who have all let me down or not lived up to my own expectations of them (which were often way too high anyway) and how hard that was for me to deal with at the time.

It did make me think though, about how do we go about encouraging kids to have role-models, when more often than not, they'll let themselves, God and our students down, just like we all do.

Of course the good Christian answer is that Jesus should be our ideal role-model-which I'm totally down with, but at the end of the day, young people need good role-models right in front of them, living out their faith in the flesh and blood.

So as youth leaders/ministers/counsellors and friends, we need to be careful not to set ourselves, or anybody else, up as perfect role-models, but just normal flawed followers of Jesus, just like everybody else.

yeah, a much healthies view hey- and prob less likely to feel we should be perfect.
One of my mates at uni, while on placement at a retirment home, totally stuff up and the olds in the group fully got into it and helped her our and sung heaps more than if she'd done a perfect job!

Sometimes it's good for the 'leader' to fail and need the help of others (so long as their prepared to admit it!).

But such a pity that you find arrogant, opinionated, poor model so-called youth leaders who don't seem to care that they have standards so below par and at the same time think they know it all!

Yeah I dunno Kat, it always annoys me when i have to do it on other people's sites, not too much of an issue for me at the moment-my blog isn't that popular!

What about when it seems like your hero - God and/or Jesus Christ - has failed you? As it seems to me lately, I feel very much let down, both in myself and in God. What do you do then?

Yeah I dunno Ben, that is a much bigger question, one I definitely would not think best to try and answer through Blogger comments.

I don't believe there is a single answer to a question like that, its something that needs to be discussed and thought through in person. No doubt I'll cya down at Games and we'll talk more then.
