What's with God and numbers?

Half prompted by all the strange number references in Revelation, and just by the questions that always come up about them, I've been trying to get my head around the significance of certain numbers in the bible.

3 seems to get a bit of a mention, mainly with the Trinity, Jesus' best 3 mates, and some other things I can't think of.

7 gets a massive run, days of creation, heaps in Revelation, it being 'God's number' (??) and such.

12 is pretty big, obviously the 12 disciples, which was a reference to the 12 tribes of Israel, which signifies everybody or completeness or something.

40 days of the Israelites wandering the desert and Jesus being tempted.

So many numbers, so many unknown meanings...

Yes, I wonder if these numbers are actually 'better' numbers.
Does it mean that, when, for example, I'm doing excercises, I should do 7, or 12 or 40? Is it better to do stuff like this? I'm not sure. And is it really evil to do 66 of something? Or 666. Do numebrs really hold that much significance. Sorry, havn't really answered anything here, or offered my opinion. Just asked more questions.
Ahhh! Unanswerable questions!
