Fasting dilemmas

One of the things a few of us crew from the Huddle have decided to do this week is to try a bit of fasting, for a number of reasons I won't go into now. Basically it seems like something Jesus said was a good idea-but more on that another day.

But then, the problem for me is when? Because I'm so often sharing meals with people, which is something I really value, I don't want to miss out on that because I'm fasting. Particulalry if I'm going to somebody's house or them to mine. Not just because I like eating food with friends, but sharing meals with people is something I know Jesus said was important.

Another factor is having footy tomorrow, is it a good idea to go into footy ona fairly empty stomach? And should that even be a factor?

Will see how it goes...

The usual biblical reason was to concetrate on earnest prayer. Makes sunday brekky a good one to skip.

Does it have to be food? To me fasting something (other than food) that comsumes the majority of my free time usually hits the spot. I've always wondered whether it was different for different things that are fasted?...

what do you think?

Fasting is (biblically) temporary food abstinence. It is a spiritual discipline, as would be giving up other things which may have assumed undue importance. In an earlier post, Digs was giving up something for Lent, as another spiritual discipline.

Maybe think of something similar to Ramadan fasting, nothing more than water while the sun is in the sky. Its not an easy thing to keep up for an extended period of days.

Yeah I'm not convinced it has to be food, just the idea of giving stuff up is a good spiritual discipline. Not everybody can give up food for medical reasons, so other stuff may suffice.
