What does it mean to believe?

Have been thinking about this a bit lately. A mate was talking about why they are a vegetarian-all this stuff about how it's not environmetally sustainable etc, which I believe, but I don't believe it enough to change my meat eating habits. So do i really believe?

The same goes with like eating organic food and that. i believe it's better for me, but still buy the cheaper stuff witht he chemicals, so do I really believe?

When people say they believe in God, but do not change their life as a result of that, do they really believe? Do I?

Just an interesting thought.

Travel plans

Am in the middle of planning my first ever overseas trip, and it's looking pretty crazy at the moment!

The bulk of it will be in Africa with TJ, hopefully doing some sports clinics and stuff, then a couple of weeks in Europe and one in the States on the way home.

Am leaving in 6 weeks-so still plenty to organise!

Street Preaching

Had a bit of a run in with the local street preachers in Frankston yesterday, which was a bit of fun.

As soon as I saw them I was just so pissed off, but not in the mood for a debate, so was gonna just leave it. But then I saw a couple of good friends of mine there with the preachers, so went to go catch up with them, and then one of their friends asked me why if I was a Christian that I didn't street evangelise.

So off I went! I wasn't rude or pushy, but made it known I didn't agree with what they were doing, as-among other reasons, it wasn't a way I really saw Jesus do his ministry etc etc. They kept on going on about Paul, I kept on going about Jesus, with different verses flying around (man they know their Bible-I'll give them that. It has actually inspired me to better know the Gospels so as to better be able to refute them, so thats prob a good thing!)

They didn't really understand what I meant about being culturally relevant or not offending people, so that made it a little hard!

For everything I said they always kept on coming back to some sort of analogy about a person walking off a cliff/lying under a car/facing imminent death, and that it was my duty of care to tell them, no matter how I did it. I don't think they understood that I got the stories, but still didn't agree.

It's just such a strong hell based theology, which doesn't fit well with me, and I didn't have time to start that debate. Nor were they happy I didn't have a set formula for explaining the Gospel to everybody, that I would rather listen to their stories and questions first before starting off with my stuff-they didn't like that at all.

Anyways, was a fun arvo, and might go back one Sunday for some more theological debates-was good exercise for the mind!

Holy Spirit Digger 1

Since it's been about a month now, and I have the class agian tonight, I thought it about time I got around to writing up my thoughts from my Ministry of the Holy Spirit class.

Now those of you who know me will know this is not an area I'm particularly experienced in, and it's fair to say-have been quite skeptical about.

Not that the Holy Spirit is there, and can do stuff, and effects things, but probably more just skeptical about everything else that goes on around people who are 'into the Holy Spirit stuff.' I hope that doesn't sound condescending, but I dunno, I generally think fairly differently to most of my Pentecostal friends about the Bible, Church, Mission-all sorts of stuff.

Plus all the crazy 'Spirit-filled' televangelists I see didn't really help my perceptions :)

I believe the Spirit lives in all those who actively follow Jesus, but obviously it is a realm that some focus on more than others.

I'm quite happy to admit I have some baggage around all the HS stuff, some legitimate, some just me and my issues.

So, going into this weekend was a real battle for me to stay open to it all, and see what God was on about here, and not just let my prejudices get in the way.

So off I went, with an open mind...

Celebrating the Sudanese

A Gathering at Noon: Celebrating the Rich Dignity the Sudanese bring
to
Australia

In response to the recent Kevin Andrews decision and the profoundly
negative impact this has had on the Sudanese members of our community,
FLN and Lentil as Anything want to celebrate their presence in
Australia.

On Saturday, October 13th from 12pm onwards at the Abbotsford Convent,
there will be a series of activities that showcase the vibrant
offerings
of the Sudanese community in Australia.

The day will feature a lunch, children's activities, and performances
leading into the evening with a cabaret performance at 8.30pm. One of
the highlights of the day will be spoken word, poetry, and hip-hop
performed by the young Sudanese in the Refugee Mentoring Program at
Lentil as Anything.

This is an opportunity to react positively to recent stirrings in the
Australian community about the integration of new African migrants to
Australia and to reassure Africans in Australia that a sense of
welcome,
generosity and openness is what lies at the heart of being Australian.

Saturday 13th October 12pm onwards

How to recognise if somebody has had a stroke.

Got emailed this today, seems easy enough.
I'm guessing you don't just go around asking everybody you meet these 3 questions, I guess there's gotta be some sort of reason you would!

But if so, then this is what you do!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim
may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the
symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three
simple questions:

1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.

2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It
is sunny out today) If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks,
call emergency immediately and describe
the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Less and less time on the net.

Have noticed lately that I need to spend less and less time on the internet. Not that I do a lot anyway, but have noticed how much of an escape mechanism it can be for me, particularly myspace and facebook.

When i have pressing tasks, or more importantly have important things I need to think about and process and reflect on, I tend to just want to get on the net and write useless crap messages to people, instead of dealing with the real issues.

See on the internet I don't have to deal with the parts of me that I need to work on, that aren't how they should be. I can choose to only respond to messages that are easy and fun to write about, and leave the difficult ones for later. It is so easy for me to create this persona that looks like I have it all together.

But thats not the real me. I have issues I need to deal with, I have people I need to confront, people I need to encourage. On the internet I'm not accountable to anybody, I'm not forced to face the hard stuff, but in life I have to.

So I'm using myspace and facebook less and less, because the real Digger needs more time spent than the online Digger.

Imagine 07

Will post more extensively than this when not in an expensive internet cafe-but check it out, is a really great concert organised by some really inspiring young people I know.

It's for Make Poverty History and has sweet bands like Kate Miller-Heidke, Antiskeptic and Bliss N Eso there-get on it!

Great Barrier Reef-Awesome!

It's as simple as that! Everybody should see it if they get the oppurtunity-particularly if its half price!

Get to the airport early

Particularly when travelling to Cairns to conduct somebody's wedding, otherwise you may end up missing your flight, having to get a flight the next day that gets in just before the service starts-which is not good when you're running it!

Just some advice, it happened to a friend of a friend of mine....
